Book cover design –
Melancholy and the Self
This is a book cover design made for a film set. The central theme of the film is melancholy, as experienced by the portagonist who is also the author of this fictional book. The cover had to convey the idea that it is a philosophical book on this topic. The cover features an original drawing inspired by a work of Edward Munch. The typeface - Cormorant Garamond - was chosen for it's elegant shape, which looks timeless and airy.

This is how the first round looked like, while we were searching for the perfect image for this cover

Finally, we settled upon a painting by Edward Munch that captured the idea of melancholy best. I made a digital version of this painting on my procreate, which looks close to the orginal image but still retains originality. I used even more purple than on the original work, as that was the key colour in the film.

This is the original painting :
Edvard Munch, Melancholie, 1983.
Below you can see my version of it, which is quite similar but much simplified, in order to give more space to the tyopgrahy on the cover and help with legibility.
